comments sought on crane season

Sandhill crane numbers have been managed to prevent agricultural damage in the Upper Snake since 1996.

Idaho Department of Fish and Game biologists want to hear from the public about proposed crane hunts this fall.

The number of cranes that can be harvested is set by the Pacific Flyway Council, not Fish and Game, which controls only how to get the most from the state's annual allotment. Last year the limit was 336, of which 236 birds were killed.

"This year the allocation has been set at 306 birds, a similar number to last year." says Tom Hemker, statewide waterfowl coordinator for Idaho.

In the Upper Snake Region, biologists are proposing new hunting opportunities in Bonneville and Jefferson counties. Below are the proposed permits, locations and dates. All dates are in September.

County Season Permits
Teton County 1 - 7 40
Teton County 8 - 15 40
Fremont County 1 - 7 40
Fremont County 8 - 15 40
Bonneville County 1 - 7 10
Bonneville County 8 - 15 10
Jefferson County 1 - 7 10
Jefferson County 8 - 15 10

Fish and Game also wants comments on mourning dove seasons and early goose hunts. No early goose hunts are being considered, and no changes are proposed for mourning doves.

For anyone who wants to comment, the Fish and Game regional office will be open from 8 a.m. to5 p.m. Wednesday, May 9. Individuals with disabilities may request meeting accommodations by contacting Daryl Meints at Fish and Game at 525-7290 or through the Idaho Relay Service at 1-800-377-3529(TDD).

Comments may also be sent by e-mail to dmeints@idfg.idaho.gov. The deadline for all comments is 5 p.m. Friday, May 11.
